The 'Bata' T-950 is the fifth model to come out of McKinnen Industries' popular T-series of medium freighters. The T-950 borrows heavily form previous T-series freighter designs, in particular the T-800, and revives that model's popular quad thruster design and extruded engineering section, but did away with it's unpopular "arc" design and rigid keel-like support strut, which proved a critical weakness in collision testing.
One popular new feature of the T-950 is the inclusion of four magenetic clamps, hidden under external hull plates (on the same part of the ship as the airlocks, just aft of the bridge) for modular cargo containers, enable an over-stuffed Bata to carry more cargo, or to strap on tanks or crates of volatile materials to supliment its haul, though doing so slows the ship down a little.
The design also features a number of new automated systems, reducing the number of crewmembers needed slightly. This also means that it requires a bit more maintenance than older models.
The T-950 is also a bit more heavily defended than its predescesors. Though it is still far from a combat ship, the Bata has four light turret hardpoints, and it's heavily reinforced hull can withstand a few punches before cracking.
IN BLOOD MONEY: The Dawn Star is a McKinnen Industries T-950 under the command of a Tomas Rodrigez, a merchant captain with a reputation for dirty dealing, ruthlessness, and mistreatment of crew members. His attitude is so bad, in fact, that he frequently has to hire new crewmembers after every run (at far from premium wages).
Despite frequently operating on the Rim, and a penchant for making smuggling deals with organized crime families, Captain Rodrigez has never seen fit to put guns on the Dawn Star. He says he is confident that no pirate would ever dare attack a "Respectable" merchant such as himself, and that his small security contingent (as well as his own "dead-aim" with a sidarm) would be sufficient to fend off any boarders.
His few permanent crew members whisper among themselves that he's simply too cheap to buy guns.
